South Parade Pier, Portsmouth
FLLR GB001 = Saint Etienne
This first selection from this Maxell XLII 90 minute tape was recorded on 1993-03-05 at South Parade Pier, Portsmouth.
Taper is abbreviated as YP, who probably recorded with a Sony TC-D3 DAT and Aiwa CM-30 mics. GaoBest's copy comes directly from the taper.
It's one of his favorites, he played it frequently before it got shelved and then loaned out to me to ascertain and compare to what's already out there.
This show is already up on YouTube, here, from "whatdoidonow 1997", and my tape source doesn't better it.
Turns out that my tape ran a bit fast compared to this reference, so slowed it down 4.67% or about .79 a semitone, so that it is the exact same 45:00 length. I've also provided the original transfer so you can compare and conclude it indeed runs too fast.
NOTE: this is not just true for Portsmouth, as it was pointed out to me, but for the entire tape, so I've also speed corrected the other selections mentioned here and upped them to the linked folder.
Next up, we have four tracks from Glastonbury 1994. While we have the full setlist, we don't have tracks 1-3 or 6.
My tape mostly lines up with the "jeyem archives" BBC TV broadcast, at least pt.2, but starts out with "Hug My Soul", and leaves out the interview material.
Here's a YouTube playlist with all the extant Saint Etienne out there for this festival.
Sushi Rider [0:10] Like A Motorway [2:17] Nothing Can Stop Us Now [7:55] - the three Marks (Radcliffe / Riley / Kermode) [10:26] (cut) - "anything is possible" (J. Peel) [10:59] - Katie Puckrick interview w/Pete + Sarah [11:05] Who Do You Think You Are? [14:19] - Mark and Jeremy from The Levellers [18:18] (fragment)
The very fit looking lady is one Katie Puckrick, who was actually an American originally from Virginia, but who lived in quite a few places before moving to London in 1984 where she was a dancer for The Fall (I Am Kurious Oranj) and The Pet Shop Boys.
Here's another clip of her and co-presenter Mark Kermode from Glasto '94.
And some audio of the first time Puckrick and Cracknell met during the festival....including when they played with Oasis, who have just gotten back together again
Lastly, we have a quartet of BBC Evening session tracks, which actually didn't appear to be on YouTube, so I've just upped them there. Seemingly uncommon enough that it doesn't appear on the Saint Etienne Disco site... this could be due to some bitterness in that this supplanted the beloved John Peel's show which got moved to weekends.
As indicated earlier, these run fast but won't fix it until somebody on YouTube (or one of you, hah!) post a note.
My project for this part of the year is to transfer a huge cache of DATs (pictured above) that contain much that likely has already been put out there but also seems to have quite a bit that has not. So of course here at tapefiller.org the whole point isn't to present these (they will go through the usual channels) but instead, anything that wasn't listed on either the spine or in an insert, grouped in digestible bites of songs. So without any further ado, here's the first set. Nirvana - Return Of The Rat (The Wipers) . The description can tell it to you better than I can... looks like the taper/compiler had a copy of the Eight Songs For Greg Sage and the Wipers comp. Hole - Over The Edge (The Wipers) [cut] It's probably not becoming to give any credence to any conspiracy theories about Kurt's passing but let's just say reading about the possibilities did pass the time for me one warm summer nearly 30 years ago...Amusing to see the guy still at it...though
Our third post in, and we have a bunch of miscellaneous, simply -lovely- Factory filler for you. New Order end their Saturday Live performance (which otherwise won't feature here, you can readily find this on YouTube) with a tease of Smokey Robinson's "My Girl" - A1 Then the band, appearing in an MTV Tokyo interview when they played Japan in February of 1987, talk about some of their quite innovative and remarkable music videos - A2 A3 - Then the video mix of 'Confusion' is featured, which you can hear here (hear hear!) Or you can watch the actual video, which Warners has generously (to make a few dollars from their catalog) shared online. What struck me when I first saw this video (on the Substance 1989 video compilation) is that you could clearly see the name of the person featured getting ready to go to the show, at about 1:25 in, as this clip coveniently reveals. ALISE BITIC. And incredibly enough, here she is today, now
