FLLR 034 - New Order Tapes (part 14)

Image
Our next installment of Tape Filler includes three tranches of material, extracted from TDK and Maxell tapes.   - Pet Shop Boys remixes from 1984 (tracks 1-3) - An incendiary Hüsker Dü radio broadcast from 1987 (tracks 4-10) - Audio from New Order's 1986 "The Tube" broadcast (tracks 11-13) Here's a needledrop of the first PSB remix....a mashup of "West End Girls" with Corey Hart's "Sunglasses At Night"... Also found a 7" edit, I've made the link smaller to simulate the actual size of a seven inch platter compared to its 12" big brother. What's interesting is that "One More Chance" is a remix that I wasn't initially able to find on YT, it's actually about 4:38 in length (the remaining seven seconds is just silence).  This is definitely *not* the original Bobby Orlando mix, which can be heard below. Update:  It's been spotted.  Thanks Robert!  Discogs used to have a beta feature where you could easily com...

FLLR 023 - New Order tapes (part 11)

Image
New Order Tapes (part 11) Getting all the FLLR in Order (awful puns never cease)....we're now ready to post #023. This next set does not feature much in the way of actual New Order aural content, but a couple of other fellow traveler bands that often comprised filler slots on cassettes that traders would mail to one another. The first few tracks are taken from a New Order tape of their 26th February 1983 Kolingsborg Stockholm, Sweden performance.   Prepended to the set are some oddities... 1)  Lesson 27, part 4, dialogue ...history lesson.  Pay attention, John.   Yes, Professor Garcia.  What did you read today?   Latin American history.  What do you remember?   It was an exciting era.  Name an important country?   Mexico, for example.  W hat did you learn about it?   It is a beautiful land.  Are its people successful?   Yes, they work together. 2)  Then there's a loop of a Bernard Sumner stating that he's ...

FLLR 016 - New Order Tapes (part 10)

Image
New Order tapes part 10 of unknown. This tape was the source of a gigographical inaccuracy introduced in late November 2001 with the insertion of "In A Lonely Place" (known in taping circles as Little Boy ) into the setlist.   This can be documented here, via looking at the New Order gigography, referred to as "Waterrat", as that was the name that site maintainer Anthony Leal used for his domain,  the version on archive from 10/7/2001 on the old Waterrat NO gigography only lists 10 tracks, comparing it to the version on there from 12/18/2001 on Waterrat's site. shows the addition of Little Boy, which interestingly enough, was added between "Confusion" and "Age Of Consent", not where it is situated here, where it is (appropriately enough) inserted as tape filler to round out Side A.  The notes I maintain as to when a listing was updated also fall in line with the change caused by the appearance of this tape. version 1.44.4  11/26/01 -------...

FLLR 018 - Stereolab Plus

Image
Filler from a Stereolab tape that I recently shared.  Think these are samples from another show, but I don't know which.   You can hear on 'Transcoma Five' the band was looking for gaffer tape, likely to hold the vocal mics in place and Læticia explaining "technical difficulties" to the crowd. There's some question about the date ID for the Blumfeld track since to quote autopilot, "setlist.fm throws a further spanner in the works by suggesting that the 1995 line-up was Pavement/Mercury Rev/Crowsdell not Blumfeld", so the ID on the spine label may be wrong...   Stereolab sample-bits: Wow and Flutter  (0:05) Transcoma Five  (2:16) Ronco Symphony  (0:48)   bonus:  Blumfeld - E-Work, Köln (live 26 Jun 1995)     (9:03) FLLR 018 - Stereolab Plus

FLLR MC10-44 - Modern Classics Vol. #10

Image
Modern Classics Vol. 10 #44 Side A - 8/7 Volume 10 of a series of these.  Starts off with an annoying-sounding Rob Francis interview of a bored-sounding Danny Elfman, from 1990-07-13.   I guess all those movie soundtracks were waaaay more lucrative than Oingo Boingo proved to be, but "Skin" is a pretty good song, admittedly.  Still, a good curio for fans interested in their work, even if the interview itself is cringey on multiple levels. Even better is a long version of Tom Tom club's "Genius of Love", which I believe I pulled from the Sire 12". And then...my first of several shares of 2 Live Crew's As Nasty As They Wanna Be LP, which I had on cassette.  People literally were getting arrested for indecency from selling this, if nothing else, Luke Campbell did strike a blow for artistic freedom.  Now all of this seems quaint as we have literal "Proud Boys" Nazis with the same freedom to express their hateful views.  So maybe the less said, the...

FLLR MC6-40 - Modern Classics Vol. #6

Image
Modern Classics Vol. #6  #40  << First of a series.  I thought of looking for #1, but that would have taken you back to 1981 and very rough recordings done with a small transistor leaned up against the mic of an old Realistic tabletop mono recorder.  You would have heard a 9-10 year old me play at DJ.  Be thankful that I took it no further, not even deciding to pop on our local university radio station, little did I know that they would have probably let me on...didn't help that I commuted and didn't live on campus.   So, instead I pulled out my early 90s set...one of a series of maybe 10-12 tapes... >>  Side A - 5/18/90 These were aired as part of Mark Hamilton's "Inside The UK Café" , and were all live.  Icicle Works covering the Clash in 2020 is a bit of an eye-opener.  The Sugarcubes and Cure tracks are *great*.  Click on the above link if you want to sample any of the below listed tracks. ...

FLLR 015 - New Order Tapes (part 9)

Image
New Order tapes part 9 of unknown. Again, who knows when this stops, if anything ever stops.  Life never does, even when you reach your ultimate destination, which for everybody is death, of course.  This "New Order Story" is inundated with deaths, first of Ian Curtis (1980), and then Martin Hannett (1991), Robert Leo Gretton (1999), Anthony H. Wilson (2007), and Malcolm Whitehead (2019). FLLR015 - A1 Ceremony [FAC33 a-side] One song I never get tired of hearing, in any context.  Galaxie 500 covered this song, which is arguably their most well-known song.  This live version is taken from Club Lingerie in Hollywood CA at the end of March 1990. Cool Spacement 3 shirt. A more recent rendition from Dean Wareham and friends , done for KXLU 88.9 FM in Lost Angeles. Even Radiohead cannot completely shame themselves here.  "Thank you very much, now what?" indeed. FLLR015 - A2 Broken Promise [University Of London Union 25 Oct 1985] On the source I p...

FLLR 014 - New Order Tapes (part 8)

Image
New Order tapes part 8 of unknown. I'm not sure when this series will end, maybe when I run out of tapes to go through, or people stop sticking filler at the end.  CD-R compilations are not dissimilar but somehow in the digital realm, there's less of a predilection to mix-and-match since everything is short attention-span theater anyway, as people go from one YouTube link or another or hop six ways until Sunday through on Spotify playlist or another. FLLR014 - 01 hiss floors One of the things you'd listen to in order to determine tape lineage, meaning how many times a particular recording has been copied around. FLLR014 - 02 Atmosphere (870402 Woolwich Coronet) FLLR014 - 03 Do The Ostrich (870402 Woolwich Coronet) The encore tracks for this particular show.  The same recording as above for "Do The Ostrich" (a pre-Velvets Lou Reed composition credited to "The Primitives" not to be confused with the late-80s band trading under the same name) is ...

It would ...

FLLR 012 - New Order Tapes (part 6)

Image
New Order tapes part 6 of unknown Various and sundry culled from live tapes of the band.  Filler at its finest. FLLR012 - 01 880621 - Radio City NZ 194 FM - 'Disco Club' Mix This is pretty obscure, an unknown "Disco Club" mix from New Zealand radio blending True Faith, Confusion, and Bizarre Love Triangle, and Subculture.  Totally exclusive to this show.  Love the orchestral strings at the start. FLLR012 - 02 Paradise ('87 Aus Remix) 12 in dub This, of course, is the Robert Racic mix.  One of my favorite NO remixes, and as far as I know, never released on CD or elsewhere, except maybe on a random compilation or three. The first two tracks were taken from a tape of one of New Order's 1987 Australian shows. FLLR012 - 03 DC-860911_Roxy_Hollywood_M2 Durutti Column recorded live in their only US tour.  A copy of my friend's recording, first four songs.  Very unlikely we'll see them on these shores ever again, sadly. tracks: ...

FLLR 011 - New Order Tapes (part 5)

Image
New Order tapes part 5 of unknown Various and sundry culled from live tapes of the band.  Filler at its finest. FLLR011 - 01 various FLLR011 - 02 Sooner Than You Think (cuts) Pictured is the tape where the full recording of this show resides.  These tracks were excerpts from a 90 minute soundcheck and were filler added to the end of this tape, "+SOUNDCHECK excerpt". This is accounted as the best performance of all of their Australian '87 shows. FLLR011 - 03 Bizarre Love Triangle (full) An excerpt from my old notes: Here, I've provided BLT from my old source in full. I decided against trying to make a patch due to the vast different in SQ, and I also wanted to preserve the integrity of Tim C.'s cassette (you can otherwise leave these out and put the gig tracks on one CD and the s/c with the rest of the filler on the other) Tim C. was an associate who generously spotted me a huge archive of recordings over the years, incl...
